THE PROBLEM
The planet can be a hostile place for animals due to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, droughts, tornadoes, and volcanic eruptions. In addition to human-made disasters such as pollution, predation, habitat loss and the accelerated pace of climate change.
These disasters can lead to massive loss of life in both humans and wild, farm, companion, and working animals. Their death not only causes us great emotional pain, but also unbalances nature, and generates significant economic losses.
Almost all countries in Latin America contemplate animal welfare in their legislation, but there are still great and numerous challenges in ensuring animal welfare, especially when it comes to a disaster context.
Scientific studies indicate that climate change worsens the severity and frequency of disasters, while United Nations calculations indicate that for every dollar invested in prevention we save $15 spent in response to disasters.
The time to act is now!
THE MISSION
Animal Inclusion in Disasters (IAD for its name in spanish) is a project that seeks to promote awareness and action by individuals, communities, organizations and governments to proactively ensure animal welfare in the context of disasters.
IAD started as an educational channel on Instagram in which tips, alerts and valuable information are distributed. Currently, the project is growing to, in addition to continuing with the remote consulting service, be able to include training as well as advocacy projects.
IAD arises from the widespread need in Latin America and the Caribbean to include other species of life that also suffer the impacts of disasters of human and natural origin, but for whom very few watch over or raise funds.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Mahatma Gandhi
THE PROJECT
Education, consulting services and advocacy to promote the inclusion of animal welfare in the context of disasters and emergencies during the stages of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
Education
The pilot version of the IAD LatAm educational program takes place for free on Instagram. Through this platform, audiovisual information is distributed that explores the topics of risk mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery from disasters that include the animal approach. We cover the diverse realities of Latin America and the Caribbean in addition to promoting the well-being of all animals, not just pets.
We are developing online training to be able to form a network of action and trained assistance.
Consulting
We offer consulting services to individuals, communities, organizations, sanctuaries, companies, and government agencies that seek to deepen their disaster management capabilities in an inclusive manner towards other species.
The consultancy support is 100% personalized based on the needs and objectives of the project. We commonly work on evacuation plans, staff training and development of emergency plans.
Advocacy
Starting in 2025, we will be working on the selection, analysis and study of public policies in several countries in the region, in order to map the opportunities that governments have to promote animal inclusion in the context of disasters. In addition to the identification of key actors to form a response network and thus articulate and coordinate efforts.
The second stage of this project will include the development and proposal of a strategy to accompany governments to make the necessary changes to ensure animal welfare.
20 at 20 is a monthly series of live conversations broadcasted on the Animal Inclusion in Disasters' page on Instagram. Ana Carola Terrazas and Inés Pereyra Rivero have the pleasure of exploring various current topics related to animal welfare in disaster management, climate change and trends in the region.
Each session lasts 20 minutes and somewhere in Latin America it is broadcast at 8 p.m.

ABOUT US
My name is Ana Carola Terrazas and I am the Founder and Director of Animal Inclusion in Disasters. I am a professional in risk and disaster management and like many people, Climate change and animal abuse steal my sleep.
I created IAD to be able to do my part in the creation of a human society in which the many other living beings that accompany us on this planet and that want to live as long as we do are not exploited or mistreated.
We all have the ability to be agents of positive change for the planet and I choose to raise awareness and inspire action for animal welfare at a time as critical as a major disaster can be.
